In 1783, George and William Penrose
founded the Waterford Glass House in the port of Waterford
Ireland, and began to produce fine quality crystal. In
1851,Waterford Crystal won several gold medals and universal
acclaim at the Great Exhibition in London, but just as Waterford
was becoming popular, the financial climate changed, and the
factory was forced to close. A hundred years later, in 1951 a
group of businessmen again launched Waterford Crystal, using the
skills used decades before. In the early 1960’s, as demand
began to exceed supply, a larger glass works was built. By the
1980’s Waterford Crystal was the largest producer of
handcrafted crystal in the world. When Westminster Abbey was
approaching its 900th anniversary, sixteen Waterford chandeliers
were commissioned for the occasion. In the U.S.A. and U.K.
Waterford Crystal consistantly receives the popular vote.
